Today I went for a long walk with my neighbour. We walked through Victoria Park, which I now know was the first public park in London, and then along the Canal up to Hackney Wick. I usually walk the opposite way along this canal but this route has now become my favourite, I think it's because you meet less people and the houses along it are more interesting. I couldn't decide which would be more idyllic; living on one of these houseboats or in one of the houses with a garden facing the canal. When you pass by the house boats you always see them sitting on the decks reading the papers, chatting to their 'neighbours', stroking their dogs and watering their plants that they keep on the roofs. Imagine sitting in the armchair on a warm spring evening, with a fire next to you and a good friend opposite, talking about maybe taking your home on a short sailing trip up the canal the next day... I think living on a houseboat would suit me the best.
